We’ve all heard the analogy of the oxygen mask in the airplane as applied to ‘self care’. If you don’t put on your mask first, you can’t help others. If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t care for others.

Self-care – sometimes referred to as holding space for yourself – comes in many different forms. The point is that these activities refresh and energise, provide us with emotional and creative outlets and, in the end, satisfy our needs first.

After we’ve taken care of the basics (good nutrition, enough sleep, physical activity) our creative outlets such as dancing can energise us and form part of our self care routine. Read on to find out how to incorporate dance into your self care routine and some of the benefits you’ll enjoy by making dance a regular habit.

There are a multitude of positive benefits to belly dancing. It can correct bad posture, tone muscles, increase core strength and circulation to the pelvic area. Belly dance also offers a great form of aerobic exercise, with natural endorphins entering the body and giving us an exercise high.

However despite the physical benefits of belly dance, as with any sport or dance art if you only do belly dance it can result in an imbalance in your body. Cross training with different types of exercise both makes you a better dancer and it also helps prevent overuse injuries.

Dancing is an overall body experience, and that includes our facial expressions. Sometimes when we’re concentrating on getting the choreography right, we forget that our face might be expressing the exact opposite of what we want to convey with our dance. When I dance I feel at my most whole, at my most “me”. I'm learning to accept the imperfections, the mistakes, to accept myself as I am. When do you feel most at ease with yourself? How do you feel when you dance?

If you feel awkward or insecure you’re not alone. It can take a lot of courage to try something new or learn a new skill, knowing you’ll mistakes which will be reflected back to you in the mirror or seen by your teacher or fellow students. As a dancer, I spend a lot of time infront of a mirror. Some days all I can see are the parts of my body I tend to criticise. Other days I love to see what my body can do in terms of shapes, strength and creativity.

During an interview for health coach Caitlin Ball’s podcast I talk about how the process of observing yourself in a mirror whilst dancing can actually be an effective tool in helping with body image issues. Was ist Dein grösstes Ziel für 2020? In dieser aufregenden Jahreszeit werden neue Pläne und Ziele aufgesetzt. Es ist Deine Chance, all die Dinge zu tun, die Du so lange aufgeschoben hast, wie den Anfang oder die Rückkehr zum Tanz!

Wir würden uns freuen, Teil Deiner Pläne für 2020 zu sein! Nimm ab dem 6. Januar an unseren wöchentlichen Kursen teil und lerne eine orientalische Pop Choreografie. Wenn Shimmy Technik, Tanz Fitness oder Ballett mehr Dein Ding sind, dann haben wir einige tolle Mittagsstunden, die Du ausprobieren kannst. Zu guter Letzt freuen wir uns über unseren neuen ContempOriental Kurs am Freitagabend mit Rachida Aharrat. Wir bieten kostenlose Schnupperkurse an, auch für zurückkehrende Schülerinnen, also meld Dich jetzt an und probiere etwas Neues aus.
