Ozgen has performed, taught, choreographed & directed for the last 18 years. His reputation as a male belly dancer & teacher has taken him across the world. In Istanbul, he joined the cast of Night of the Sultans combining contemporary dance, ballet and oriental dance. Ozgen taught for several years at the Tolgahan Dance School in Istanbul, and is now based in London, teaching and performing Turkish Oriental & Romani (Gypsy) dance internationally. He is currently touring throughout the world with his theatre production 'Ask'. We are delighted that he has taken a month off from touring to teach us in Zürich!
SAMAII THAQIL
This is a genuinely rare opportunity to learn how to dance to the traditional Turkish 10/8 rhythm called Samaii. Historically, this was a court dance performed in Ottoman times. The rhythm is other-worldy and yet powerful and earthy. It is an asymmetrical rhythm and therefore a challenge to the western ear. Join Master Turkish dancer Ozgen as he breaks it down for us and explores this balletic style with intricate footwork and graceful arm gestures.
