IRAQI DANCE - TECHNICAL TOOLS & CHOREOGRAPHY
Cristina Arribas began her career as a professional dancer in Oriental Dance in 2004. Throughout her career, she has complemented her training with other styles such as Classical and Contemporary Dance and she has researched multiple styles. Certified in Pilates Mat and Studio (Stott) as well as in Hypopressive Abdominal Gymnastics (Low-Pressure Fitness) she co-directs since 2010 her own school, Shankara, where she teaches classes in all three disciplines.
Kawleeya dance, also known in the West as Iraqi dance or Iraqi Khaligy, is a dance style originating from the nomadic Iraqi gypsy people of the same name. It is currently persecuted by radical Islamist regimes for its status as a people largely dedicated to entertainment.
Kawleeya dance is an energetic dance characterised mainly by leaping movements and hair movements. As people who have absorbed the culture of the different places where they have settled, we can find touches that evoke Indian dances or the Saudi khaligi.
In the workshop given by Cristina Arribas, we will work on the Kawleeya dance in a stylised register on the chobi rhythm. The class consists of a first part where we will work on the technique and the most characteristic movements of this dance and then apply them to a choreography.
